We all think we’re going to heaven. The pure, white, cloudy place where everything 's peaceful and calm; where time won’t matter and all our good deeds will finally pay off. But have you wondered what hell might look like? The first time I saw hell was in a Tom and Jerry cartoon with Tom trying to avoid getting fried in a hot pot underground. Do you realise that all our imaginations are nothing but snippets of reality? Why is heaven believed to be somewhere in the sky? Is it because the clouds suit our visual imagination? Why is hell down below? Because the Earth’s crust is molten liquid fire?
Dante describes Hell (or Inferno) in the Divine Comedy to be of layers, each layer corresponding to different degree of sin. The intensity of the sin determines the intensity of the punishment. If God is to be just and he really does judge people by their acts, I would pretty much believe in Dante’s description.
But does being good really pay and does God really exist? What if tomorrow I die and realise I’m neither in hell nor in heaven. Maybe I’ll be transported to a different world, where life really starts. Will I see Dante sitting in a corner wondering how he could have gotten it all wrong and hoping no one believes his Divine comedy?
