Actions have consequences. My beau keeps repeating this sinister statement at intermittent intervals, and my heart sinks.
Societies are built on systems of reward and punishment, regulating our actions and ensuring that self-censorship plays a huge role in the way we all conduct ourselves. I don't believe that the two need to be mutually exclusive though, besides Santa, who says you can't be naughty and nice? And speaking of nicely naughty and mixing conflicting elements, can we talk about the power of illustration and one of my favorite movies of all time A Nightmare Before Christmas. The flip side of a wholesome jovial fat guy in a red suit is some nightmare creature like the ghostly pirate creature from The Pirates of the Carribean movie here, or Jack Skellington, taking the mantra of being punished for your misdeeds a step too far. Its no longer a question of just being crossed off the gift list, and more the terror of being dragged somewhere dark, damp, and scary if you misbehave... You better not shout, you better not cry. Actions have consequences. Bring them on I say, I've always been a fan of the dark side.
