Art for Art's Sake

I like to think I appreciate art, but do I really?

Sure you'll see me at all the "right" art events around town, but do I really "get it"? Does it matter? Do I care?

I go to see art both here in Kuwait and whenever I travel because I like looking at things that please my eye. But do I understand it? I've never really thought of that.

I don't stare at a painting for long stretches of time, nor do I look for any meaning that could shed some light on the artist's thought process. Nor do I understand its value either; you can explain till you turn blue in the face why a certain painting by an relative unknown is priced so astronomically.. and I'll nod along pretending to understand, but I really don't.

And since I'm not an "art collector", it doesn't really matter..

Does it?

I can't understand all types of arts, although I paint and have my own; painting is the least fathomable to me!
I appreciate an art picture more (like 6aboog exhibition). sculptures are of interest to me on the other hand.

I still don't get what makes a painting worth millions and what makes it a few dinars, and I stopped trying.
I'm driven to see Art for the sole reason of appreciation for the motivation and dedication the artist go through in the processing of his work.. process is some what mechanical.. but hits the nerve, a dry country (intellectually too!) is a sore country, the environment is not easy on the artist and his creativity. therefore respect envelops the appreciation and force me to pay my respect to these artists.

this my relationship with art.. in a nutshell: don't understand it all but respect and admire it all the way!

cheers

Sometimes people go to art galleries or museums only to say that "yes I've been there " without knowing what is all about . and If you start asking about small details they'll say hmm ya it was nice but ya but no  and change the subject

Well said. I don't get it either. I enjoy going, and I believe the art should not be explained but interpreted which is why I never ask the artist why. I never really go for why really, unless it was political. I usually go for how, in terms of the technique used. I'm more interested in a process if it was unique and I usually end up buying the piece that was laser cut, then oxidised with zinc, then dipped in wax and polished to create an effect! The hideous ones are my favourite.
