This is dedicated to a friend on her birthday.
I have been running from life. Scared to face the truth, to accept it and move on. Well, it’s late, perhaps too late, but I have realised one thing, finally. You can’t forgive and forget both at the same time. One leads to the other, ideally. I choose now to forgive and remember, and make sure that I don’t waste any more of my years regretting past decisions.
It is only when you chose to let go of the past that you can move ahead and look at the future. That which is to come deserves more attention than that which has already happened and is done with. It is important to understand that what has happened can’t be changed; instead, the possibilities of what is going to happen--what may happen--is in our hands. We can choose to make a wiser decision based on our experience; that is what the past should be: a learning tool for a better future.
I have taken the decision to make sure that I do just that from now on--to not look at my past with regrets, but with gratitude that I had all the experiences to make myself a wiser and better human being. As the saying goes, "don't cry because it's over--smile because it happened."
Happy birthday.
