Secret Admirer

So I stood in line in the café, wondering why I was there, why I was ordering a bagel. I never ordered bagels. I wasn’t a bagel kind of girl.

The lady behind the cash register looked at me and cleared her throat. There, daydream over. Snapped out of it. Revelation never came.

“I would like…. a bagel….”

“’Kay,” she said, her dark eyes glancing back at me appraisingly as she rung up my order. “Cream cheese?”

“Strawberry…” I said hesitantly.

“Si,” she confirmed. “Anything else?”

“No,” I agreed, and exchanged one kind of dough for another.

“Duuuude,” Katerina gushed beside me. “They have cupcakes.”

They did. Fascinating. I wasn’t in a cupcakey mood, though, either. Apparently, I was in a strawberry-cream-cheese-smeared-upon-bagel mood.

“I’ve never seen you order food from here,” Katerina said.

“Yea, I’ve never stalked a guy for this long either,” I retorted. “And if he prefers strawberry-cream-cheese-upon-bagel breakfasts, I guess I should get used to the flavor.”
She stared. “You’re kidding right?” She literally held her breath and did not breathe again until I rolled my eyes at her. I hoped she never ended up in the ER because of me. Wishful thinking, probably, but still.

“Who’s kidding who. You think I’d turn into a moron for a crush on some random guy?”

She looked at me with a smirk. “I dunno, sister, I see you visualizing wedding dresses in that brain of yours, and it’s kind of creeping me out.”

“I’m rushing things?” I joked, deciding to play along.

“No,” she said seriously. “I just really don’t like the color of the bridesmaids’ dresses.” She snapped her fingers in my general direction as if changing the channel of my brain. “Try visualizing something towards blue.”

Blue, I mused. Ok, sure. I looked around me, but the most gorgeous of all male specimens had disappeared, Katerina was almost done with her cupcake, and I realized I was late for class.

But hey, I had a bagel.
