Stephanie Rond

When you first take a look at the most recent works by Columbus, Ohio artist Stephanie Rond, one thing is obvious. Her work is bold, up front, layered, and unapologetic. Rond is on a mission and is challenging the viewer to question the traditional gender roles not only in modern society but in the art world.

She is creating a dialog between the heavily male dominated graffiti and street art movements and combining them with elements of mostly female dominated world of crafting.  By combining spray paint, stencils, lace, and other elements of both genres she is making a new medium unique to her vision.  By doing this she is confronting the heavily male influenced style and messages of contemporary graffiti as it celebrates its heroes with an almost rock star status, big gallery deals and product development deals.

In her recent series of works entitled “Bad Seed” Stephanie is examining the commonly asked question, and decision women in Western society have to ask themselves “Peruse my career or become a mother”. Rond decided long ago to become a full time artist and is exploring her choice both internally and externally in the contemporary view of working and creative women.
