Give people a chance. True enough, respect and trust are earned, not given. If they cannot be given, how can they be discarded? Or taken away? Perhaps, only, they can be forgotten (at worst), or forgiven (at best). Trust, you see, is not tangible; it cannot be grabbed or sheltered or hoarded or framed behind a film of protective glass. It is not a destination; it is a journey. It varies in volume and in perspective, in degree and in acceptance. Do not be so harsh with it, do not seek something to shred with your nails or forsake with your words. It is as sacred as anything worthwhile that we know, and should be treated as such. Accept and share trust and respect—carefully but generously, on an individual but also on a general level. Be careful: because “an eye for an eye,” as it “leads to more blindness,” also results in personal blindness. Be generous: because a loveless life is not worth living. For the sake of this love, of humanity, and of yourself—consider it. One’s soul craves it, and one’s well-being depends on it, to the extent that the average fish craves the sea and the average falcon desires the sky. One’s soul is your own soul, and this man’s, and that woman’s. The acts of respecting and trusting are akin to holding a up sheet of glass against a sunray; both you and your surroundings bask in the light.
Respect and trust are brilliant. Give them only a chance to shine.
