Life is like a chessboard. A chessboard of black/white, agree/disagree, like/dislike, yin/yang, happiness/sorrow, day/night, communal/lonely…
Our happiness in the game is determined by many factors. How far-sighted we are—do we see only the black or white squares surrounding us? Or do we see the kings and queens in the horizon? How do we view our opponents? Do we topple them with a handshake or with a fist?
And how do we cooperate with our fellow pawns: the bishops, the knights, the pedestrian troopers, the monarchs? What do we sacrifice for the ones we love? Our turn? Our dreams? Our direction? Ourselves? How do we view our loss—do we immediately punish and label ourselves as failures, degrading ourselves further in a cycle of self-prophesized incompetency? Or do we herald our defeat as a learning experience so as to improve our game?
And how seriously do we take the game, anyway? In the end, is this a matter of life and death, or right and wrong? Do we uphold dignity and honor above glory and victory?
