See What We See

Each of us sees in others what we carry in our own hearts. Our eyes are both an avenue to take in the world, and to reflect it. They filter every physical image—as physical as we perceive it, of course—and then our minds act as the second filter; or perhaps it is our hearts that function as the second filter, and our minds are shouldered back to the patient, degraded, wiser position of the third and final filter.

What we love in others is what we cherish for ourselves, or in ourselves; the wrongs we see by others often mirror the personal flaws that we face or the demons that we fear most. Just as we need treat others the way we want to be treated, so must we open our eyes to who we are to understand ourselves first before attempting to comprehend the rest of the world. We need to discover who we are, what we want, what we fear, what we seek—before projecting all of this onto everyone else.

Perhaps that is, in fact, the key to becoming more clear-eyed, warm-hearted, and open-minded. Probably there is much more to the formula; but even a puzzle piece has its value in the game. I’m not quite sure. But it’s worth a shot.
