Sisters

Paul Roberts Paintings

I know a pair of sisters who fought over a man. Well man is being generous, lets call things by their name as Hirsi Ali likes to bang on and say boy. What made the situation funnier/sadder (depending on your pms status) is that they were twins.
One of them, the slightly prettier one, had the unfortunate tendency of talking in her sleep, a fact her sister exploited in her attempts to get ahead in the love stakes. This particular boy did not as far as I know succumb to the wily ways of the second twin, though he did grow up to be a huge man slut, but the cycle of competition and envy continued to flourish between these sisters, occasionally spilling over and tainting relations with other siblings. This introduction should in no way color any perception one might have of the (could be delightful) Lemy sisters, of which I know very little except that they seem to be French, and attractive in a broody brunettey way. What I like about this painting is that it captures the not always comfortable nature of sisterhood, where love can become controlling, and mild jealousy spills over into a comparing game few can rise above. And yet, still, I can see support here, a bonded unity, if not in spirit at least in flesh. And the elephants in war background doesn't hurt.

Evelyne and Brigitte Lamy:

Not twins, Evelyne (left) being nearly two years older than her sister Brigitte (right). The later, a talented professional dancer, sadly died of cancer in New York City in 1992 at age 34.
