After what felt like hours, they reached the top. He squatted on the highest firm branch, perched elegantly with his chin cupped in his palm, his golden eyes calculating. Around them, rain fell upon a sea of dark green foliage. Overhead, the sky was still the same unchanging gray, although the drizzle had increased tenfold into a steady rainfall. The girl hoisted herself beside him, raising her hood and picking the splinters from her fingers gingerly. She noticed rather reverently that he was breathing very lightly. “Can you fly above this?” asked she, wrapping her tattered jacket more firmly around her.
“Just hurry.”
She edged nearer, her arms outstretched to help her balance. She reached him, placing her hands lightly on his shoulders.
He lunged into the air, wings sprouting from his back, his skin becoming hard and leathery under her touch. His neck extended almost gruesomely and his nose stretched into a snout, so quickly that she would have missed it had she chanced to blink. Claws sprouted from his fingers, and his limbs darkened to blackness. The rustling violet-black mane swished in the wind, tickling her cheek and whispering in her ear as she lay sprawled on his back, clinging to where his wings began at the shoulder blades. Looking back she saw the white bandages around her foot billowing behind her and blurry from the rain, as further off that great tail swept lazily in their wake.
She breathed in deeply the smell of pines and rain and security, and hung on tight.
