There is a hydra in our modern times—a very many hydras. They did not crawl out from between the weatherworn pages of an anthology of fairytales or mythology, although the representations depicted within those lines give a face (or many, rather) to their intangible existence.
The hydra I speak of is a seven-headed monster of seven deadly sins, existing soon after humankind’s birth and written about since before medieval times. Each head is a sin, each belch of fire is a sin put to action. Some humans have the shadow of a hydra. Some shadows have seven heads, wavering above on the tip of the silhouette of their bodies; some have three, or four, or six. One head is particularly tricky; who’s to say if that it is the head of a hydra or human?
Which goes to show, sometimes, it is difficult to know people. Look into their eyes—far more trustworthy than their shadows. If the darkness in their eyes matches their multi-headed shadow, take care in your transactions and your affections. If the clearness of their eyes is paired with the one-headedness of their shadow, it is easier to believe you have met a fellow human and not a hydra. But if the clearness of their eyes contrasts the shadow, you may need glasses, which may confirm what you see—or not.
Do not be quick to judge a person by their shadow.
